Journalists Urged To Embrace Development Journalism

Media Practitioners have been urged to be objective in their reportage and also engage in development journalism aimed at promoting good governance towards delivering dividends of democracy.

The Vice President, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Zone D, Mrs Chizoba Ogbeche stated this while featuring on “Perspective” a Kapital FM Current Affairs Program in Abuja.

Mrs Ogbeche who stressed the need for the media to hold government accountable, urged journalists to stay focused on delivering their constitutional responsibilities.

Mrs Ogbeche who is also the Deputy Editor,of a National Newspaper, explained that both citizens and leaders at all levels have a role to play in promoting democratic governance, but however urged the Federal government to be more proactive in addressing the current hardship in the country.

Mrs Ogbeche while highlighting the dividends of democracy, noted that there was need for reduction of cost of governance by the legislature.

She also called for more synergy among the three arms of government in delivering the dividends of democracy.

“The best dividend of democracy is good governance, if we have good governance, every other thing will work out well.

Mrs Ogbeche who described democratic governance as progressive, especially in the area of information dissemination stressed the need for the media to hold government accountable.

“Democracy is still the best form of government, you cannot compare democracy with what happened during the military regime, but the way we run it is the problem, we need attitudinal change, both citizens and leaders at all levels to enjoy the dividends of democracy” she emphasized.

According to Mrs Ogbeche, both citizens and Leaders at all levels have their different roles to play in promoting democratic governance

“There are some constraints that can stop some media organization but with the opening of the media space with the advent of the new media we are in for better governance” she added.
