The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to halt the proposed increase in telecommunication tariffs until service providers improve their network quality.
In a motion of urgent public importance, member, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State,
Obuku Oforgi described the planned hike as insensitive, citing its potential impact on consumers already struggling with economic hardship and poor service delivery.
He warned that small businesses, which depend on affordable telecom services for operations and customer engagement, would face additional financial strain if the increase is implemented.
Adopting the motion, the House directed the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, along with the Nigerian Communications Commission,NCC, to suspend the tariff hike until service quality improves.
The Committee on Telecommunications has, however, been tasked with ensuring compliance.
