To guard against vandalism, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has approved over N795m insurance coverage for all critical government assets and facilities in the territory.
This was one of the outcomes of its first FCTA Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting in 2025 in Abuja, presided over by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Briefing Journalists after the EXCO meeting, the FCTA Head of Service, Mrs Grace Adayilo who presented the Memo for the insurance coverage, explained that the measure would safeguard national assets in FCT against various risks including damage, loss or disruption.
According to Mrs Adayilo, the insurance is a federal government directive aimed at ensuring government business continuity by minimizing financial losses in the event of unforeseen incidents.
“This memo or memorandum is a directive from the federal government under an Act and dated 21st July 2018, mandating the compulsory insurance of government assets, properties, buildings under construction and public fundings. It falls under sections 64 and 65.”
“Today I had a memorandum to present to the EXCO, seeking the approval for the award of contract for the provision of insurance cover for the combined all-risk insurance policy for the FCTA movable and immovable assets for 12 months.”
“So the memorandum was presented, and the contract was approved by His Excellency, the Honourable Minister of FCT, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike,” Adayilo said.”
Also speaking, Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Chidi Amadi who corroborated that the insurance coverage became necessary at such a time, noted that 6 Memos were approved out of the 12 presented, with some withdrawn completely, while others were kept for further deliberation.
“So, physical security of policemen and military does not in any way underscore the fact that government assets, critical assets need to be insured. That is the essence of this insurance policy, and it is mandatory anyway. It is, therefore, incumbent on FCT to carry out these policies.”
“It is not a policy that is specifically originated by FCT. The same thing is applicable in other strategic departments and arms and other ministries of the federal government, Amadi said.”
On his part, the Director, Department of Security Services, Mr Adamu Gwary hinted that the EXCO also gave approval for the construction of police divisional headquarters and officers’ quarters in Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali Area Councils to the tune ₦3.648 billion to further enhance safety and security of citizens in the territory.
“The facilities include a police divisional headquarters and a six-man staff quarters for officers in these locations. This move will ensure adequate security presence in rural communities and address the security challenges in the hinterlands,” Gwary said.
Moreso, the Coordinator of the Sattelite Towns Development Department, STDD, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, said the EXCO gave approval for the construction of a 33KV power supply line from Dawaki to Bwari and the installation of solar-powered street lights along Arab Road and other adjoining roads.
“The approval of award of contracts for the construction of 33 KV power supply from Dawaki to Bwari and Solar Street Lights system of Arab Road and U-Shaped Road connecting to Arab Road in favour of Meserrs and CGC Nigeria Limited.”
“Within the completion of a period of six months and part of the purpose of this approval is to improve the security system of the satellite towns especially in dark hours. The second approval here with me is the ratification of award of contracts for the construction of multi-event sports centres in Abuja.”
“The committee also approved the award of contracts for the construction of 2 magistrate courts in Asokoro and Garki districts within the federal capital city, with the completion period of 15 and 18 months.”
The approval of the multi- billion naira projects and insurance of national assets was geared towards building a world class Capital City that every Nigerian would be proud of.
