The House of Representatives Committee on the South East Development Commission, SEDC has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as a step toward lasting peace and development in the region.
Speaking at the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja, the Chairman, Chris Nkwonta, emphasized that insecurity in the southeast remains a critical challenge, hindering progress.
He noted that Kanu’s continued detention has fueled tensions, deepened grievances, and threatened regional stability.
Nkwonta highlighted that the SEDC was established to bridge developmental gaps in the southeast, stressing that sustainable growth can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and inclusivity.
He commended President Tinubu for signing the SEDC bill into law but urged the federal government to address lingering issues of marginalization and political grievances in the region.
Inaugurating the committee, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen described the commission as a crucial step toward addressing the developmental challenges of the South East.
Represented by his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, Dr Abbas assured the committee of the House’s full support, pledging collaboration to ensure the commission delivers on its mandate.
