Amidst growing calls for the removal of key figures in the oil and gas industry, a group of 50 lawmakers under the agies of concerned members of the 10th House of Representatives is urging caution and patience.
The lawmakers argued that demands for the removal of Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPCL, Mele Kyari and his counterpart at the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed are premature and should await the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The lawmakers, led by a member from Edo State, Billy Osawaru, while addressing news men in Abuja, explained that the house had via its resolution mandated the joint committee of the House on Midstream and Downstream Petroleum resources to investigate the pertinent issues in the oil and gas sector but a final decision was yet to be reached.
He emphasized the importance of fair hearing, citing the parliamentary culture of allowing parties to be heard before making decisions.
“Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese had asked President Bola Tinubu to immediately dismiss Kyari for allegedly stifling the economy’s growth due to the oil sector crisis”.
“Agbese had also called on the President to sack Farouk Ahmed, the chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and other inherited appointees”.
On the ongoing nationwide protest, the lawmakers appealed for calm, urging Nigerians to bring the protests to an end.
The group commended the National Assembly’s efforts to address the situation, particularly the youth dialogue convened by the House and urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, trusting in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “renewed hope agenda” to address the challenges facing the country.
