The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, has reaffirmed commitment to mitigating oil and gas activities on the environment.
This is with a view to accelerating the nation’s path to Net-zero emissions and sustainable development.
The Director General of NOSDRA, Chukwuemeka Woke stated this at the 3rd National Extractives dialogue in Abuja.
The dialogue was organized to find ways to tackle persistent practice of gas flaring that has marred the breathtaking landscape of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources.
The Director General of NOSDRA, Chukwuemeka Woke said the move became necessary to secure the environment, the economy, and health of the citizenry.
He therefore stressed the need for participants at the dialogue to brainstorm on ways to confront the challenges of gas flaring, which has negative impacts on national development.
Mr Woke maintained that inline with global climate change mitigation efforts and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration, the agency is poised to end gas flaring, reduce methane emissions, and enhance environmental sustainability.
In a remark, the Executive Director, Spaces for change , the convener of the technical session of the national extractive dialogue 2024, Mrs Victoria Ibezim Ohaeri noted that the government can unlock economic values and foster economic development that can benefit Nigerians if gas flaring is reduced in the country.
The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji represented by Dietter Basi stressed that curbing Gas flaring will unlock new pathways for energy efficiency, economic diversification and community resilience which will boost economic growth and job creation.
He said that NEITI would continue to support initiatives aimed at ending oil spills and gas flaring in the country.
