In a press statement from the African Boxing Confederation, the 13th African Games gold medalist expressed optimism about making a comeback.
“I’m depressed and hoping to rise again stronger because I’m bitterly down. The knee injury is very painful; I wish myself a quick recovery,”
Adura Olalehin, Omole’s coach, confirmed the boxer’s withdrawal from the Olympics to AFBC Communications, citing the medical issue.
“Due to a medical issue, Dolapo is not going to Paris,” he said.
Ethiopian boxer Leta Fikremariyam Yadesa replaces Omole, after losing the final of the African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in Dakar, Senegal to Omole, last September.
Nigeria’s Olympic boxing team will now consists of only two athletes: Cynthia Ogunsemilore in the women’s lightweight 60 kg category and Adams Olaore in the men’s heavyweight 92 kg division.
Nigeria made its Olympic boxing debut in 1964 and has since won a total of six medals (three silver and three bronze).
The Paris Olympic Games is scheduled from July 26 to August 11 with boxing set to take center stage from 27 July through to 10 August.
