Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed the 10th Assembly’s commitment to eliminating systemic barriers that hinder women’s full participation in politics and public life.
Dr Abbas stated this in Abuja during a meeting with Speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly to commemorate the conclusion of the 16 days of Activism against Gender-based violence, organized in collaboration with UN Women, the Canadian Government and the Norwegian Embassy.
Dr Abbas emphasized the need for the importance of eradicating gender-based violence and promoting women’s representation, citing the transformative value women bring to governance, leadership, and policymaking.
While advocating mainstreaming women and gender issues in the constitution, statutes, policies, and budgetary processes, the Speaker revealed plans to hold a town hall meeting with women groups to discuss their priorities for the 2025 Appropriation Bill.
He commended the Speakers for their progressive stance and support for gender-based bills and proposals.
The Speaker also highlighted the need for Nigeria to join the league of countries like Rwanda, India, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, which have successfully enshrined affirmative action in their constitutions noting that these countries have made significant strides in promoting gender equality and urged Nigeria to follow suit.
Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development,
Kafilat Ogbara urged lawmakers to create safer spaces for individuals to receive support without fear of intimidation.
Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly,
Adebo Ogundoyin encouraged participants to actively engage and lend their support to ensure the success of these initiatives nationwide.
