Unemployment: House Moves To Equip Youths With Essential Skills

todayDecember 3, 2024

Background

In a bid to tackle Nigeria’s rising youth unemployment, the House of Representatives is considering two bills aimed at equipping young people with essential skills.

The first bill proposes establishing the Institute of Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Corporate Governance, which would provide training and mentorship to entrepreneurs.

The second bill aims to establish the Chartered Institute of Business Educators of Nigeria, CIBEN, focusing on advancing business education in Nigeria.

Speaking during a public hearing on the bills, the Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abass, emphasized the need for skills development in various fields, stressing that this would yield significant results for Nigeria’s peace, prosperity, and stability.

Represented by Nkama Nkemkama, the Speaker noted that many businesses in Nigeria face barriers when trying to scale up, improve productivity, and expand services.

He emphasized that leadership is crucial for success and that a structured approach is needed to equip entrepreneurs with the necessary skills and tools.

The proposed CIBEN is envisioned to be an institution that will advance the study, training, and practice of business education in Nigeria.

Its establishment would also ensure that educators have the tools and knowledge to build a generation of globally competitive entrepreneurs and businesses.

The Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Ahmed Munir, said these initiatives align with the legislative agenda of the 10th House of Representatives, which seeks to change the narrative in the lives of Nigerian citizens.
