Chairman of the House Committee on Polytechnics and other Higher Technical Education, Fuad Laguda
has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring accountability in the management of polytechnics and other higher technical institutions in Nigeria.
Laguda stated this in Abuja after an oversight function meeting with five polytechnics from the South East which had initially failed to appear before the committee.
They are; the Federal Polytechnic, Akanu Ibiam; Federal Polytechnic Nekede; Federal Polytechnic Ohodo; Federal Polytechnic Isuochi and Federal Polytechnic Oko.
The Lawmaker emphasized the importance of polytechnics and higher technical institutions in the country’s development, stating that the committee takes the budget performance of these institutions very seriously.
The five polytechnics, presented their budget performances and provided additional information.
Laguda noted that the committee would conduct physical visits to verify the information provided, especially in cases where picture evidence was not presented.
He also acknowledged the security challenges faced by some institutions, citing an incident where soldiers were attacked on their way to one of the schools in the north-west.
Despite these challenges, Laguda expressed optimism that the committee would complete its oversight on all 37 federal polytechnics in Nigeria by next week.
The committee has already reviewed most of the reports submitted by the institutions and is on track to finalize the new year’s budget.
