Constitution Review: House To Convene Nat’l Dialogue On LG Autonomy

todayNovember 29, 2024

Background

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution review of the 1999 Constitution is set to hold a national dialogue on local government autonomy next month in Abuja.

The event aims to consolidate ideas and strategies for achieving a robust local government framework, which is critical to the ongoing constitutional review efforts.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who is also Chairman, House Committee on Constitution review, stated this in Abuja at a meeting with members of the committee.

He emphasized the importance of inclusivity, encouraging committee members to engage with stakeholders, including state caucuses, governors, and political parties.

According to the Chairman, the dialogue will focus on one hundred and Sixty One areas, including local government autonomy, judiciary, electoral matters, security, devolution of powers, gender issues, revenue, and fiscal reforms.

Additionally, the committee will commence zonal public hearings next year, covering 12 states across the six geopolitical zones.

This follows the resolution of the committee on the locations of the public engagements.

The States include North East: Gombe and Borno States; North Central: Nassarawa and Niger; North West: Kaduna and Sokoto; South East: Enugu and Imo States; South South: Bayelsa and Cross River States; and South West: Lagos and Ondo States.

These hearings will provide a platform for stakeholders to contribute to the constitutional review process.
