todayJune 16, 2024

Background

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has announced plans to expand access to eye care services in Nigeria through the National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, which has passed its first reading in parliament.

Speaking at the Charity Champions Gala Night in Abuja, Kalu expresses concern over the estimated 24 million Nigerians suffering from sight loss and reiterated the House of Representatives’ commitment to providing a lasting solution through legislative interventions.

Kalu commends the efforts of individuals and organizations, including Dr. Yahaya Attom, Jay Jay Okocha, and Kanu Nwankwo, for their humanitarian services and contributions to eye care and other social causes.

The event, organized by Attom Foundation, aimed to raise awareness and support for essential eye care services for underserved communities.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing the crisis, citing the impact of his foundation’s efforts in treating over 4,000 constituents with eye problems in the last year.

The Deputy Speaker praises the gathering of like-minded individuals committed to impacting humanity and thanked them for their dedication to the cause.
