Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, has pledged the House’s support for gender bills aimed at increasing women’s political participation and representation in the legislature.
Dr Abbas who made the pledge at the signing of an MoU between his office and the UN Office for Women, emphasized the need for early lobbying and advocacy on women-related constitutional bills.
The Speaker who was represented by his deputy, Benjamin Kalu encouraged women to advocate their rights, starting from the grassroots level, and promised to champion the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill.
He acknowledged the importance of the MoU, which will facilitate capacity development and youth legislative mentorship initiatives.
The UN Women Country Representative, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, emphasized the need for favourable legal frameworks to enable women and girls to reach their full potential, highlighting the importance of at least 30% representation of each sex for sustainable development.
