todayMay 31, 2024

Background

The Military High Command has vowed a decisive and forceful retaliation after a terrorist ambush at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State left five soldiers and six civilians dead.

According to a statement by the Director Defence Media Operations Major General Edward Buba the attack, carried out by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), targeted troops deployed as part of Operation UDO KA to maintain peace and protect local citizens.

It explained that the terrorists, arriving in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and with support from hidden assailants in nearby buildings, launched a surprise assault on the checkpoint.

General Buba while stating that the soldiers were caught off guard, leading to significant casualties condemned the attack and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.

“Each and every soldier lost in battle is a terrible loss, and we mourn these brave troops”.

Emphasizing the need for community support in combating terrorism, Major General Buba said investigation into the attack is currently underway.

“Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. The IPOB capitalized on this to perpetrate the attack”.

He called for greater cooperation from local residents to effectively counter such threats stressing that those responsible for this heinous act will face severe consequences.

“We will bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat”.
