The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says the ministry will deploy all techniques to fight illegal migration and criminality in the country.
Dr Olubumi Tunji-Ojo stated this during his visit to the Nigeria Immigration Service Headquarters Abuja to ascertain the level of work at the technology centre.
Dr Olubumi Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was determined to bring lasting hope to Nigerians in terms of border security.
He noted that the automated surveillance system, when fully operational, would enhance border security as well as improve easy access to communication in times of emergency .
“What we are doing now is automating the whole surveillance system in our border space and real time, we can view a lot of our borders at this moment and I wouldn’t want to disclose more but the simple truth is we are automating the whole process and by October the phase one of the whole border surveillance system would have been completed”.
The Minister warned perpetrators of illegalities at the nation’s borders to desist as massive technological gadgets had been put in place to strengthen the capacity of security agencies in apprehending them.
“Anyone who thinks that he can penetrate illegalities within our border space should be prepared for the consequences, we are renewing the hopes of Nigerians in all areas of life, this is just phase one and we will soon start phase two, we will do it in such a way that the entire 4,447 kilometers of Nigeria’s borders are secured.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs Kemi Nandap noted that the service was working closely with people in the border areas on intelligence gathering for effective protection of the nation’s borders.
Mrs Nandap explained that the officers had been properly trained and motivated for the onerous task.
