The Need To Strengthen Relations Between Nig And United States
Historically, from 1960 when Nigeria gained her independence as a sovereign Nation to date, there has been established cordial relations between Nigeria and the United States of America.
Remarkably, the existing age-long cordial relations between the two nations have been on a Tripod form, namely: trade, foreign Investments, and Democracy.
Interestingly and worthy of note is the fact that the United States and Nigeria are both occupying respective positions of leading nations in their continents, playing vital roles in the pursuit of peace and unity in the global community.
For instance, the United States, in its position as the leading Nation in the World as well as the Super Power Nation plays vital role to ensure continuous peace and unity in the global community.
Nigeria, on its part, and position as the leading nation in Africa, equally plays vital roles for peacekeeping, fostering unity of African Nations and in the world at large.
Remarkably, in their existing age – long cordial relationship, Nigeria and the United States need each other in areas such as trade and Foreign Investments as well as in democratic systems.
An American citizen, Susan Rice in an attempt to describe the cordial relationship between Nigeria and the United States, asserted that the United States interest in Nigeria remains constant, and as the United States needs Nigeria desperately, Nigeria also needs the United States desperately for patronage and direction.
Consequently, under the current global economic setback, particularly in Nigeria and other African Nations, there is an urgent need for Nigeria and the United States to strengthen their existing bilateral relationship to meet each other’s need.
The two Nations should, therefore, partner to ensure unparalleled activities in their business, political programs, and in their exchange of cultural and technological ideas.
As Nigeria is currently facing a downfall in oil revenue and in need of proper diversification of its revenue base from petroleum products to other untapped natural resources, there is need for partnership for the United States to support improvement of Nigeria’s sources of revenue generation.
For instance, collapsed and abandoned oil refineries have to be rehabilitated to be more functional while untapped liquid and solid mineral deposits in different parts of Nigeria should be explored.
This will boost oil revenue generation and improve the level of oil products being supplied to the United States.
The United States, with its well- developed modern technological systems, should also ensure that the Nigerian government have access to all the technological equipment and accessories and also good knowledge of their operations.
For instance, all levels of Government should have modern security gazettes such as Drones and Digital Satellites for eradication of high rate insecurity situation and crimes in the country.
Equally important in the two Nations’ bilateral relations is for the United States to partner with Nigeria in establishing industries in all States in Nigeria.
This will not only make Nigeria to boost its economy but will also make her to be one of the developed nations in the world and a leading nation in Africa.
Leaders in the country should therefore have a sober reflection on the age-long cordial relations existing between the United States and Nigeria and seek ways to meet the leadership of the United States on how the relationship of the two nations could be strengthened.
