FG Commits To Eradicating Cervical Cancer

Background

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment towards the eradication of cervical cancer in the country.

The Director, Advocacy and Communication, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Ladan Aliu made the commitment in Abuja at a one day sensitization programme for Women Religious Groups and the National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ.

Dr. Aliyu who said cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths in Nigeria, explained that the Federal Government had devised ways to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the free vaccines to curb the menace.

In a presentation, the Director, Disease Control and Immunization in the Agency, Ahmed Rufai highlighted various causes and negative effects of the disease on the social economic development of the country.

Speaking on the Roles and Responsibilities of Women Religious Groups in sensitizing Nigerians on the vaccines, the Lead Country Representative of Girls, Kosi Izundu called for more support in the fight against the disease in Nigeria.

According to Izundu, “You can advocate to your fellow leaders and peers to utilize all their platforms to spread accurate information on the HPV vaccine.
Allow your eligible girls to get vaccinated, Religious leaders should set the example by allowing their eligible girls to get vaccinated. This can help reduce vaccine hesitancy and promote trust in the safety and efficacy of the vaccine.”

The event was organized ahead of the introduction of the HPV into the routine Immunization and mass vaccination of girls, age nine to fourteen in schools across the country.
