Journalism In The Face Of Environmental Crisis
In recent times, the world has faced unprecedented environmental challenges, occasioned by climate change.
This has resulted in a rise in global temperatures as human activities, particularly the burning of coal, oil and gas, has released billions of tons of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.
The development has led to a record high greenhouse gas emission to an extent that, the last four years, have been the hottest on record, with no sign of abating.
There is also the effect of the rising sea levels and melting ice which has resulted in erosion and flooding as witnessed across the globe, loss of habitat and biodiversity, salt water intrusion, poor sanitation and displacement of communities.
Climate change is also exacerbating food and water insecurity.
In such a scenario, the role of the media is more crucial than ever before to serve as a pivotal force in shaping public discourse and policy on environmental issues.
Perhaps , this formed the reason behind the theme of this year’s world Press Freedom day, which is “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the environmental crisis”.
World Press Freedom day, celebrated on May 3rd every year was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
The day is intended to raise awareness on the importance of freedom of the press and the challenges faced by journalists and media orgainsations around the world as well as paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The day also serves as a reminder that the government has a responsibility to create a conducive environment for the development and growth of the media and to ensure the safety and security of journalists.
Furthermore, it is an opportunity to appreciate the efforts of journalists and media organizations in maintaining the flow of information.
As the theme of this year’s celebration focuses on the environment, it highlights the responsibility of the media, especially environmental journalists who are tasked with the critical mission of informing the public about the state of the planet earth.
In this regard, it is their duty to delve into complex scientific data, translate it into accessible information, and bring to light the human stories behind environmental changes.
For instance, stories of communities affected by pollution, erosion or flooding, wildlife at risk of extinction, or the efforts of conservationists can motivate the public to become more environmentally conscious and proactive.
In Nigeria, Environmental crises are a pressing concern, impacting both the land and the lives of the people.
According to UNICEF, 78 million children in Nigeria are at risk due to inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene related diseases and climate hazards.
Environmental degradation and deforestation are also major concerns among many others.
In all these, Journalism plays a crucial role in addressing environmental crises in Nigeria by raising awareness, educating the public, and holding those in power accountable.
Therefore, Journalists should develop more effective storytelling techniques, which can influence public perception and drive home the urgency of environmental crisis.
Their reports can pressure governments and organizations to implement stronger measures to combat environmental challenges.
However, despite their critical role, journalists often face challenges, including limited access to information, political pressures, and sometimes even threats to their lives.
These obstacles highlight the need for support and protection for journalists as they carry out their vital duties.
As the environmental crisis deepens, the need for robust, insightful journalism becomes ever more pressing.
Therefore, in the face of the environmental crisis, a free, fearless, and dedicated journalism is not just valuable but vital for the survival of the planet Earth.
