Formulate Policy To Check Bullying In Schools – Educationist

todayApril 29, 2024

Background

Ministry of Education has been called upon to come up with a policy that will checkmate bullying in the nation’s educational system.

A Guidance Councillor and Educator, Dr. Eucharia Chigozie Edem who made the call while featuring on “Perspectives” a Kapital FM Current Affairs Programme said the move would ensure a safe learning environment.

Dr. Edem explained that creating a functional policy to monitor bullying in every school would also assist in ending the menace and guard against the psychological impact on children .

All schools should develop a clear anti-bullying policy that defines bullying, outlines consequences, and provides guidelines for reporting and investigating incidents” she emphasized.

She urged parents and the community to be involved in the anti-bullying efforts, by reinforcing positive behaviours and reporting incidents.

“Support victims and bullies alike by providing counselling and support services for both victims and bullies, addressing underlying issues and promoting positive behavioural change.

Also contributing on the programme, a renowned Human Rights Activist, Mrs Ene Jonathan who said children should be well sensitized on the effect of bullying, stressed the need for proper monitoring of students while in school.

She called for awareness for students, teachers, and parents about the harmful effects of bullying, its various forms (verbal, physical, cyber), and the importance of empathy and kindness.

Mrs. Jonathan who explained that addressing bullying in schools requires a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach noted that a one size fit all approach cannot work.

Schools Management should Increase adult supervision by ensuring adequate supervision in areas where bullying often occurs, such as playgrounds, hallways, and cafeterias” Mrs. Jonathan added.

She stressed the need for establishment of a safe and supportive environment.

This will Foster a culture of empathy, inclusivity, and respect, where students feel comfortable reporting incidents and seeking help” she stressed.

The Guests equally called on both parents and school authorities to support the fight against bullying in schools towards ensuring a better educational environment.
