PWDs : Violators Of Disability Act To Be Sanctioned -HOR

todayApril 2, 2024

Background

Injustices against Persons With Disabilities, PWDs, will no longer be tolerated as violators of the Disability Act 2018 will henceforth be sanctioned.

The Chairman House of Representives Commitee on Disability Matters, Mr Bashiru Dawodu who stated this at a news conference in Abuja frowned at the denial to access to public spaces and other forms of discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, PWDs, despite the Disability Act.

Mr Dawodu condemned instances like the recent denial of access by KFC Outlet to Mr. Adebola Daniel, the Son of Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former Governor of Ogun State, describing it as unacceptable, the constant discrimination against PWDs by individuals, organizations and institutions.

Mr. Dawodu, stressed that the committee would ensure total compliance to the Disability Act as practiced in other parts of the world to give every citizen a sense of dignity, inclusiveness and protect the rights of every Nigerian irrespective of their physical condition.

He reiterated the Committee’s Commitment to kick start full implementation of the Disability Act that would guarantee access to public buildings, employment and welfare for Persons With Disabilities.

The Lawmaker urged State Governments to domesticate the disability Act as the committee would continue to monitor adherence by government agencies, institutions as well as the private organizations.
