African Games 2023: Falconets Face Host Ghana In Final

The defending champions of the African Games women’s football event Falconets of Nigeria have reached the final of the women’s football event of the African Games 2023 to defend their title.

The Falconets achieved this after recording a 2-0 win against Uganda in the semi-finals on Monday.

Two second half goals from Okah Adaobi and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu secured the win.

Adaobi opened the scoring in the 74th minute before Okwuchukwu added the second on 89 minutes.

It is now three wins in three games for the Christopher Danjuma-led side.

The team opened their Group B campaign with a 2-0 win against Morocco before hammering Senegal 4-0 in their second game.

This means host Ghana will slug it out with Nigeria in the final after the Black Princesses delivered a stellar performance, defeating Senegal 3-1 at the Cape Coast Stadium.

On its part, the hosts, Ghana secured a spot in the final of the African Games women’s football tournament

Their remarkable display assures Ghana of at least a silver medal in the competition.

Entering the semi-final as favorites, the Black Princesses had previously bested Senegal on their path to qualifying for the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

Ghana lived up to expectations in the semi-final, taking an early lead after 19 minutes through Tracey Twum. Ophelia Amponsah extended the lead to 2-0 before Senegal narrowed the deficit with a penalty by Rokhyatou Kande.

However, Ophelia Amponsah sealed the victory with her second goal, securing Ghana’s place in the final.

With a berth in the final guaranteed, Ghana now aims for gold. Coach Yussif Basigi and his team, determined to fulfill their pre-game promise, have set their sights on the top prize in women’s football.
