The Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, has lamented over the preference of tax payers in the council to boycott payment of revenue to the council’s confers.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Maikalangu said that the tax payers prefer to pay cash to fake agents and get reduction, instead of paying to the council’s legitimate bank account for accountability.
He said that many fake revenue agents have been arrested in different parts of the council, warning that henceforth, only taxpayers who present bank tellers of their payment into the council’s account will be accepted.
Maikalangu explained that the collection of revenue is not easy hence the reason for constituting the taskforce team upon assumption of office in 2023.
The AMAC Boss added that there has been a remarkable increase in revenue collection in 2023, hence relying more on the taskforce team to further help in blocking revenue leakages created by fake revenue agents.
He however stressed that only daily tickets sold to cars, motorcycles and traders in the market are exempted while other payments are carried out through banks to checkmate leakages.
Chairman, AMAC Revenue and Security Taskforce, Comrade Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, said the taskforce has arrested and prosecuted over 68 illegal revenue agents and will take steps to digitize revenue payment.
He however appealed to residents to pay through the AMAC designated bank accounts to avoid paying twice especially with the present state of the economy in the country adding that residents can also make transfers and present tellers afterwards for reconciliation.
Amodu added that the chairman has engaged ICT consultants to digitize the activities of revenue collection, to monitor closely those who have paid and who haven’t paid for accountability.
