The Department of State Services (DSS) has appealed to the organized labor to reconsider plans for nationwide protests scheduled for the 27th and 28th of February.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations & Strategic Communications of the service, Peter Afunanya, the proposed protests aimed at highlighting various economic grievances have been met with concerns over potential escalation into violence.
The DSS acknowledges the legitimate right of labor to protest but emphasizes the importance of maintaining peace and public order.
The service highlights intelligence suggesting that certain elements may exploit the protests to incite unrest and perpetrate violence, exacerbating the already challenging socio-economic situation in the country.
The statement underscores ongoing efforts by government authorities to address economic difficulties through dialogue and negotiation, urging citizens to allow these processes to take their course.
Furthermore, the DSS calls on all sectors of society, including political parties, religious and traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and parents, to discourage violence and promote unity.
It warns against the political exploitation of the current situation and appeals to citizens to remain vigilant against destabilizing forces.
As part of its commitment to maintaining peace, the DSS pledges to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure the security and stability of the nation.
