Commentary On President Tinubu’s New Year Address To Nigerians

By Tersoo Zamber

On the New Year day, Nigerians woke up to the nationwide broadcast of President Bola Tinubu.

In the broadcast, he promised to fight every obstacle that impedes business competitiveness in the country.

The president also explained the steps his administration was taking to improve the economy and address other national challenges.

From the Salutation, “Dear Compatriots” to the last sentence, “May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, President Tinubu left no one in doubt that his administration is committed to salvaging the nation from its woes.

He was emphatic that he is not oblivious of the daunting challenges Nigerians are going through due to some reforms by his administration including the fuel subsidy removal.

A popular saying, credited to an American Inventor, Charles Kettering goes, “a problem well stated is a problem half solved”. One can confidently say that for the President to clearly highlight the challenges of Nigeria, it is reassuring that they are half addressed.

That the President went on to proffer solutions to these issues is more convincing that sooner than later, Nigerians would breathe fresh air of liberation from the tough times which do not last.

From the high cost of living and inflation rate at Twenty-Eight Percent, insecurity and the unacceptable under-employment and unemployment, the President did not mince words in marshaling out plans to tackling them.

One of such heartwarming announcements was the national living wage he promised for workers.

This is in realization that the current minimum wage of Thirty Thousand Naira is grossly inadequate for the present day economic realities.

He also promised to ensure that refineries in the country resume production to address fuel crises.

Again, the insecurity which has plagued the nation, the President gave assurances to tackle it headlong.

This is very instructive because, if there is no security of lives and property, there cannot be any meaningful development. In this regard, the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has to be very decisive.

Insecurity in the country has claimed the lives of too many innocent citizens and every measure has to be applied to secure the country.

Another striking aspect of the address was the inclusivity it accorded Nigerians.

President Tinubu proved he is a leader requiring the support of all, whether in government or not, for his administration to succeed.

The intriguing part was his call on political opponents to join hands with him in moving the country to greatness, stressing that the time for politics was over.

This shows a leader with the interest of the people and the country at heart. Also, the President harped on the need for equity, fairness and justice for all Nigerians, irrespective of their backgrounds.

This is another area of concern the present administration must pursue with vigour, to give all citizens a sense of belonging.

This will correct the sad situation in which discrimination, marginalization, tribalism and favoritism are assuming the other of the day in the country.

Many patriotic Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief after the inspiring presidential address, a clear indication that the President Tinubu-led administration is indeed, a Renewed Hope for Nigerians.

The President must therefore, work the talk for Nigerians to appreciate voting him as President.

Nigerians must also join hands together to evolve a new Nigeria they dream of. Nigerians should embrace the New Year and the scintillating Presidential address as a resolution for a new beginning for a great, prosperous nation and people.
