Senate says it will not tolerate inhuman treatment of inmates at the Nigeria Correctional Service Centers

The chairman, senate committee on interior, senator Adams Oshimohle stated this during the 2024 budget defense by the National Assembly joint committees on Interior in Abuja.

Senator Oshiomhole expressed concerns about the well-being of inmates, demanding specifics regarding their numbers, feeding practices, and the management of security dogs.

In his response, Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa told the lawmakers that out of the 81,358 inmates, a staggering 53,362 were awaiting trial.

According to him the daily feeding budget for each inmate was N750, providing three meals at N250 per meal, while the service maintained 900 security dogs, incurring a daily cost of N800 per dog for their upkeep.

Nababa appealed to the lawmakers for adequate budgetary allocation to improve feeding cost of the inmates.
