In a bid to address the dire situation faced by internally displaced persons, IDPs, in the country, the Federal Government has been urged to prioritize job creation as a means of alleviating their plight.
The Chief Executive Officer of a Non Governmental Organization, Madinma Foundation, Dr. Chidinma Ogwo made the Appeal at a Media Conference in Abuja to draw attention for urgent intervention.
According to her, providing employment opportunities to IDPs is crucial in restoring their dignity, self-sufficiency, and integration into the society.
“These people have been forced to flee their homes due to due conflict, violence, or natural disasters, leaving them vulnerable and without the means to support themselves are living in dire conditions”.
“They often find themselves in overcrowded camps or makeshift settlements, lacking basic necessities such as food, clean water, shelter, and healthcare.
“Many of them have endured extreme trauma and have lost loved ones, struggling to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar and challenging circumstances”, she said.
Ogwo who said the Foundation, has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts highlighted the need for the government to develop targeted programs that provide vocational training, skills development, and employment opportunities specifically tailored to the unique circumstances and needs of IDPs.
“By equipping them with relevant skills and connecting them with employment opportunities, we can help break the cycle of dependency and foster their reintegration into society.”
According to her, the call for job creation for IDPs also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8, which emphasizes the importance of promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.
“The Federal Government should also recognize that the plight of IDPs has far-reaching implications beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis as the presence of large numbers of displaced persons puts a strain on host communities, which may already be grappling with limited resources and infrastructure.
“Neglecting the needs of IDPs can lead to increased tension, social unrest, and even further displacement and therefore, by addressing the challenges faced by IDPs, the government can foster social cohesion and prevent the escalation of conflicts.
Ogwo appealed to Nigerians to demonstrate compassion and solidarity by supporting IDPs through donations, volunteering, and advocacy.
She also urged the government to collaborate with international organizations, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to the IDP crisis.
While nothing that IDP camps provide temporary refuge only,
Ogwo appealed to the Federal Government to address the underlying causes of displacement which includes efforts to restore peace and security, promote social cohesion, and facilitate the safe and voluntary return or resettlement of IDPs.
