Coalition of Civil Society Organisation Transition Monitoring Group has advocated continuous sensitisation for Nigerians to participate actively in the nation’s electoral processes.
Briefing newsmen in Abuja, ahead of the Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa States Governorship election, the Chairman, Transition Monitoring Group, Auwal Musa-Rafsanjani also called for attitudinal change of the citizenry towards the electoral process.
He explained that full participation during elections would help in the betterment of the country.
According to him, it will also go a long way to sanitize the process and ensure only credible leaders that would work for a greater Nigeria were elected into political offices.
Musa-Rafsanjani urged citizens of the states concerned not to allow themselves to be used to disrupt the process as peaceful conduct of the elections would help strengthen the nation’s democracy.
“Citizens must understand that democracy is about citizens participation as elections present the best opportunity for citizens to express their will and power. Citizen’s participation especially in large numbers also reduces manipulation opportunities for political actors. Hence Citizens should desist from aiding and abetting malpractices, shun vote trading and keep an eagle eye on their votes. TMG wishes Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa states a free, fair, transparent, violent free and credible elections.”
In her contribution, the Senior Program Officer of the group, Mrs Ogechi Obialo-Isuma stressed the need for security agencies deployed to Imo, Kogi and Beyelsa states for the governorship election to discharge their duties lawfully.
Also, the FCT Coordinator of the group, Mr. Lukman Afolarin urged the electoral umpire to improve on the lapses experienced in the off circle election in Ekiti and Osun States by ensuring that necessary logistics were adequately put in place for smooth conduct of the elections.
