The need to escalate inclusion through advocacy and Investigations has dominated presentations at an inclusive investigation training on Accountability in governance for Reporters and Editors in Nigeria.
The Convener, Adora Onyechere said the training focused on advocacy and inclusion, as well as the relevance of data in reporting gender equality to give the issue the wider space it deserves.
The FCT Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Comrade Osaretin Osadebamwen
who identified the critical role women play in politics and called for the appointment of more women in political offices.
The FCT NUJ chairman stressed the need for journalists to take advantage of the training by projecting negative issues or challenges relegating women to the country.
One of the resource persons, Mr. Dele Atumbi in a paper entitled Gender Equality, the Benchmark for Constitutional Democracy, expressed concern about the high rate of poverty among women.
Mr Atumbi said Gender equality should be made a human rights issue calling for concerted and coordinated efforts to protect women.
While Speaking on Disability inclusion and Women’s challenges, Ms Susan Kelechi, a Polio survivor identified lack of representation and accessibility for women in politics and the workplace as one of the major factors of discrimination.
One of the facilitators, Mr Amos Dunia who spoke on Discourse Governance and Citizens: The Missing Link, The Opportunity: expressed concern that Journalists were no longer brought to the front burner, critical national issues.
Participants in the training are expected to embark on investigations, advocacy, and campaigns through their reportage.
