Niger State Unveils Plans For Green Economy Summit

The Niger State Government has concluded plans for the first-ever subnational Green Economy Summit in Minna, the state capital.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago made this known at a media conference in Abuja ahead of the two-day with the theme “Sustainable Future: Harnessing Green Assets and Innovation for Niger State’s Prosperity.

According to him, the summit is in response to the global challenges of environmental degradation, climate change impact, insecurity, and the growing need for sustainable solutions.

The Governor further stated that he would be unveiling the Niger State Green Economy Blueprint to guide the state’s developmental choice of action on climate change.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, Governor Bago who reiterated his administration’s resolve towards sustainable development of valuable natural resources (green assets) through the use of innovative practices in driving economic growth and prosperity, expressed optimism that the forthcoming Summit would help in achieving the feat.

He said the summit is in alignment with the country’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions, and transition to a low-carbon economy adding that it will help in meeting Nigeria’s pledge under the Paris Agreement, the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bago further stated that the summit would also emphasize the role of local communities and their indigenous knowledge systems in sustainable development while empowering them with the necessary knowledge and resources to engage in eco-friendly practices and green initiatives, to achieve the SDGs.

The Governor also, unveiled plans to attract both local and foreign direct investment for the development of rail transportation, cattle ranching, and alternative energy.

While assuring Investors of adequate security of investments and agricultural development initiatives, Governor Bago disclosed that the State is investing heavily in the procurement of heavy-duty equipment.

Over 500 participants are expected to discuss and help proffer solutions to issues of decarbonizing Energy Systems, Circular Economy, Waste Management, Green Agriculture, Food Security, Eco-Tourism, and Community Development.

Other issues to be discussed include; Conserving Biodiversity for Sustainable Development, Innovative Solutions for Water Management, Smart Cities, Sustainable Urbanization, and Women and Youth Engagement.
