FG Reviews National Policy On Nutrition

The Federal Government has reviewed the national policy on nutrition to enable it to have a comprehensive approach towards women empowerment and nutrition.

The Deputy Director and Nutrition Focal Officer, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Christiana Oliko made this known at a media engagement on promoting Women and Girls Empowerment for optimal Nutrition in Nigeria.

Mrs Oliko explained that the multisectoral plan enables relevant ministries to wake up to their responsibilities to ensure issues around nutrition as a tool for healthy living cut across all stages and every individual, especially women, and girls.

In a remark, the Programme Manager, of Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition, CS-SUNN, Dr. Goodness Chidi-Anyanwu called on the government at all levels to FasTrack implementation of the National Gender Policy that promotes gender equality, women’s rights, and optimal nutrition.

According to her. “Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition Nigeria CS-SUNN restates that Empowering Women and Girls for optimal Nutrition is the right path on Nigeria’s journey towards a more prosperous and healthier nation. This is therefore a call for increased representation of women in decision-making roles to enable them to shape and influence policies and programs for sustainability of nutrition investment outcomes in Nigeria”.

Dr. Anyanwu explained further that her organization remains committed to the continuous mobilization of civil society groups and other implementing partners to advocate and implement activities that will promote women’s and girls’ empowerment for optimal nutrition in Nigeria. The alliance will continue to hold government accountable for the implementation of policies that support the empowerment of women and girls and sustainable diets for these vulnerable groups”.

She reiterated that collaboration with relevant stakeholders will break the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition and poverty in Nigeria and pave the way for a more healthier and prosperous nation.
