todayMarch 30, 2026

Background

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from his position.

This was made known in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir.

In his resignation letter, Ambassador Tuggar expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the country and contribute to the implementation of the administration’s 4D foreign policy framework.

He also thanked the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support during his tenure.

The statement noted that during his time in office, Tuggar demonstrated strong leadership in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Ambassador Tuggar was also credited with deepening Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations through strategic engagements with traditional partners and alliances, particularly within the Global South.

His tenure further witnessed efforts at promoting regional security cooperation, including initiatives such as the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD).

In the area of economic diplomacy, the former minister worked to position Nigeria as an attractive destination for foreign investment, especially in the energy sector, while also facilitating diplomatic interventions that secured the release of detained Nigerians abroad.

The statement further disclosed that Ambassador Tuggar submitted his resignation letter ahead of the March 31 deadline for political office holders, in compliance with directives by President Tinubu in line with the Electoral Act.

The letter was received at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Abubakar Kana.
