4th National Convention, A Defining Moment For APC, Nig’s Democratic Future – Tinubu

todayMarch 28, 2026

Background

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for stronger unity, discipline, and a renewed sense of purpose within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the ruling party holds its 4th Elective National Convention in Abuja.

Addressing delegates at the Eagle Square, the President described the convention as a defining moment for both the APC and Nigeria’s democratic future.

He urged members to strengthen their collective resolve and recommit to the progressive ideals upon which the party was founded.

Tinubu emphasised that unity remains the APC’s strongest asset, cautioning that political parties falter when personal ambitions overshadow collective interest, discipline, and long-term national goals.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our size or numbers, but our unity,” he said,

He added that the convention must demonstrate that the APC is strong, cohesive, and forward-looking.

The President reaffirmed that the APC was established not merely as an electoral platform but as a vehicle for national transformation—one aimed at improving governance, strengthening democratic institutions, and expanding opportunities for all citizens.

Responding to concerns about Nigeria’s political landscape, Tinubu dismissed claims that the APC seeks to entrench a one-party system.

He noted that a vibrant and credible opposition is essential for deepening democracy and shaping sound public policy.

He also defended recent amendments to the Electoral Act, stating that all changes followed constitutional processes, legislative scrutiny, and public consultation.

Highlighting key reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu acknowledged that rebuilding Nigeria requires tough choices but maintained that the sacrifices being made will deliver long-term economic gains.

He pointed to improvements in infrastructure development, fiscal realignments, foreign exchange stability, and rising investor confidence, noting a recent decline in inflation and expanded economic activity.

On the power sector, the President identified persistent challenges such as legacy debts and ageing infrastructure.

He announced plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company to strengthen electricity transmission and improve national supply.

Tinubu also renewed calls for greater inclusion of youths and women in politics, urging the APC to create more leadership pathways across all levels of governance.

He appealed for decorum throughout the convention, stressing that internal contests must not fracture the party.

“At the end of this convention, our party must be the victor. We are one family, marching forward with clarity, discipline, and purpose,” he said.

The President commended party leaders, governors, and members of the convention planning committee for their efforts, urging newly elected officials to serve with humility, integrity, and vision.
