State Police A Critical Step To Addressing Insecurity – Gaidam

todayMarch 26, 2026

Background

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to comprehensive police reform, declaring the establishment of state police as a critical step towards addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges and ensuring a safer environment for citizens.

This position was emphasized during a high-level meeting in Abuja, where the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, received a delegation from the Steering Committee on the State Police Establishment Framework, constituted under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police.

Speaking at the meeting, Senator Gaidam reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to decentralize policing structures in line with its Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that bringing policing closer to the people would significantly enhance intelligence gathering, responsiveness, and overall effectiveness in combating crime at the grassroots level.

He stressed that the complexities of modern security threats require innovative and localized solutions, insisting that state policing is no longer optional but imperative.

The Minister also commended the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, for the swift implementation of policy directives aimed at improving policing efficiency nationwide, adding that such proactive leadership reflects a shared commitment to protecting lives and property.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Olu Ogunsakin, outlined ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive and practical framework for the successful establishment of state police systems.

He explained that the initiative is designed to strengthen public trust in law enforcement institutions and ensure a greater sense of safety across communities.

Professor Ogunsakin further assured the Minister of the Inspector General’s full support in building a modern, resilient, and community-oriented security architecture capable of addressing both present and emerging threats.

The meeting is seen as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s broader police reform agenda, underscoring sustained efforts to refine operational frameworks and ensure that the proposed state policing system is efficient, accountable, and responsive to the unique security needs of communities across Nigeria.
