JANDY Calls On Urhobo Nation To Embrace Unity, Reconciliation

The Joint Association of Niger Delta Ethnic Youths, JANDY, Urhobo Nation Chapter, has called on Urhobo people at home and abroad to embrace unity and reconcile with former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori.

This is contained in a statement signed by its National President, Mr. Mark Ikpuri, in Abuja.

The statement expresses concern over what it described as the decline of the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, as the once-respected institution is gradually losing its direction and relevance.

It highlights that recent leadership disputes, including the last UPU election, have created divisions that threaten the unity and development of the Urhobo nation.

“UPU was never meant to be a political battlefield. What we are seeing today is not who we are as Urhobo people,” Mr. Ikpuri states.

The statement recalls that during Chief Ibori’s tenure as governor, the UPU maintained its structure and dignity, free from undue interference, and contributed to the stability and progress of the Urhobo community.

According to the statement, the group also draws attention to the socio-economic challenges faced by Urhobo communities despite hosting major oil facilities and pipelines in the Niger Delta.

It notes that under Ibori’s administration, settlements including Osubi, Ugolo, Okukoko, Otokutu, Opete, Agbarho, Udu, Oghara, Abraka, and Mosogar experienced significant development, with expanded economic opportunities for local residents.

It urges Urhobo traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders to rise above personal interests and prioritize collective development.

According to the statement, the group appeals to Chief Ibori to forgive past grievances and actively re-engage with the Urhobo people.

“We must come together under one solid pillar, and that pillar right now is the Odidigborigbo of the universe. This is about our future,” the statement adds.

The statement therefore calls on Urhobo kings, or Ajuvwes, to lead reconciliation efforts to restore the UPU’s relevance and enable Chief Ibori to guide the Urhobo nation towards sustainable socio-political and economic growth.
