LP Postpones Congresses, National Convention

todayMarch 24, 2026

Background

The Labour Party has announced the postponement of its scheduled ward, local government, state congresses, and national convention earlier slated to begin on March 26, 2026.

The adjustment follows a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Senior Special Adviser Media to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa in Abuja.

According to the statement, in the original timetable, ward congresses were to hold on March 26, local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, while the national convention was scheduled for April 11.

It explains that the postponement is to allow more time for members and prospective Nigerians to participate in its ongoing nationwide membership re-registration exercise.

According to the statement, the Labour Party has inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee chaired by Mr. Ginger Onwusibe, member representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency to ensure a smooth and credible process.

It says at the Inauguration of the committee, the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, urges members to demonstrate diligence, impartiality, and commitment in discharging their duties.

It encourages the committee to use the extended timeline to perfect all preparations to ensure hitch-free congresses and a credible national convention.

The statement appeals to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and supporters nationwide for their understanding, assuring that a revised timetable will be released in due course.

Members of the Committee includes lawmakers, party officials, and civil society representatives such as Comrade Salisu Mohammed, Mr. Obinna Aguocha, Mr. Amaobi Ogah, Mr. Ibe Okwara, Mr. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Mr. Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Mr. Benedict Etanabene, Mr. Emmanuel Emeruwa, Comrade Lawson Osagie, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.
