Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will go ahead with its March 29th planned National Convention despite internal disputes.
Wike who warned that anyone calling for reconciliation within the party must do so with honesty and sincerity, maintained that his political camp currently controls the party’s structure and remains open to genuine reconciliation.
His remarks followed a ruling by the Court of Appeal which nullified the November 15–16, 2025 PDP National Convention held in Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The decision supported an earlier judgment by the Federal High Court in Ibadan that upheld the existing National Caretaker Working Committee.
According to Wike, the crisis in the party is part of a natural political process. He said the PDP would overcome the challenges and remain strong.
“PDP will never die. We are ready for reconciliation, but it must be genuine,” Wike said.
Wike who warned against secret negotiations, urged those seeking peace to be transparent, even as he tasked Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, to present clear proposals for reconciliation.
The FCT minister also dismissed claims that he is a “mole” in the PDP because he serves in an administration led by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He argued that some of those who accused him have since moved to the APC while he remains in the PDP.
On the planned convention, Wike said preparations had already been completed.
According to him, the party has paid necessary fees and secured a venue for the event.
He rejected suggestions to form another caretaker committee to resolve the crisis, insisting the convention must go ahead and all members will be allowed to participate.
Wike also responded to threats of further legal action at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, saying everyone has the right to approach the court but that his camp currently holds the advantage.
Earlier, Moro appealed for unity in the party.
He said the National Assembly caucus of the PDP is committed to ensuring that the party remains united and strong.
Moro explained that he had earlier met with another faction of the party led by Tanimu Turaki to seek possible solutions to the crisis.
He urged members to put the survival of the party ahead of personal ambitions, noting that sacrifices are necessary to keep the PDP strong ahead of future elections.
House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, described the Court of Appeal judgment as important not only for the PDP but also for Nigeria’s democracy.
Chinda said the ruling could restore confidence in the party and encourage members who previously left due to fears about its stability to return.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP in Imo State, Austin Nwachukwu, said the state party chairmen are in support of the current direction of the party leadership.
Nwachukwu also called for improvements in the party’s membership registration process, urging the leadership to align with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act ahead of future elections.
Several prominent party leaders attended the meeting, including former governors Samuel Ortom and Ifeanyi Ikpeazu, as well as the PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and Secretary Sam Anyanwu.
