New Reading Space Opens At Specialist School

todayMarch 8, 2026

Background

A new reading space designed to support students with learning difficulties has opened at a specialist school.

The Book Nook opened on Thursday at the Bee Hive School in Northampton and will allow pupils to sit quietly and read or listen to audio books in a calm environment.

The area, which contains an assortment of donated books, was created after more than £1,000 was raised for renovations by Law Business Research in London.

Sophie, a Year 12 student, said: “I would use [the Book Nook] if I was really stressed or just use it to read books that I love.”

The space was opened on World Book Day, an annual event encouraging children and young people to develop a lifelong habit of reading.

Tamsin, 17, came dressed as Lucifer the cat from Cinderella and said she was currently reading The Fellowship of the Ring, by JRR Tolkien.

“I think [The Book Nook] is really cool and cosy if you need time alone,” she said.

“I will use it because it is relaxing and it will make me feel happy.”

Steph Barrick, a teacher at the school, added: “Students will be given an opportunity throughout the week to come and use [the Book Nook] as they please.

“We have structured reading time every day so it will be utilised.”
