IWD : NUJ FCT Chairman Advocates Greater Investment In Women

todayMarch 8, 2026

Background

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called for greater investment in women through education, mentorship, opportunities and resources.

In a statement to mark International Women’s Day, Ike said the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights the importance of empowering women for the development of families, communities and nations.

According to her, investing in women strengthens institutions and promotes inclusive growth across society.

Ike said the celebration was personally significant to her as the first female chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, noting that her achievement reflects the impact of giving women opportunities to lead and excel.

“When women are empowered, the benefits extend beyond individuals. Newsrooms become more inclusive, storytelling becomes richer, governance becomes more responsive and societies become more just,” she said.

She praised female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience and professionalism, noting that many continue to break barriers, cover challenging assignments and mentor younger colleagues.

However, Ike stressed that recognition alone is not enough and called for deliberate actions to support women in the profession.

She urged media organisations to mentor young female journalists, create safe and supportive work environments, and expand leadership opportunities for women in the newsroom.

Referencing the United Nations call for “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” she said governments, institutions and media organisations must work together to remove barriers hindering women’s progress.

Ike also celebrated women within the NUJ, the FCT media community and across Nigeria, commending their contributions to journalism and national development.

She urged stakeholders to continue supporting women, saying greater opportunities for women would strengthen journalism, communities and the nation.
