Nigeria has congratulated the Republic of Ghana as the country marks its 69th Independence Anniversary, describing the milestone as a historic moment in Africa’s liberation journey.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed the message in a congratulatory statement to Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, celebrating Ghana’s independence which was attained on March 6, 1957.
According to the statement signed by Spokesperson Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, in Abuja,
Ghana’s independence is a defining moment for Africa, as it became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain freedom from colonial rule, inspiring many other African nations, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty and self-determination.
Nigeria notes that both countries share a longstanding relationship built on common historical experiences, cultural ties and shared aspirations for peace, prosperity and African unity.
The Federal Government also acknowledges the strong cooperation between Nigeria and Ghana in advancing regional development through organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the United Nations.
Over the years, both nations have maintained strong diplomatic engagement and collaboration in key sectors including trade, education, energy, defence cooperation, migration management and cultural exchange.
The free movement of citizens between both countries has also strengthened economic ties and people-to-people relations.
Nigeria further commends Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional stability, noting that both countries have worked together in peacekeeping missions and mediation efforts across West Africa.
As Ghana celebrates this year’s independence under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” Nigeria applauds the resilience and commitment of the Ghanaian people in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.
The Federal Government reaffirms its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through enhanced economic cooperation, diplomatic engagement and cultural exchanges.
Nigeria expresses confidence that the partnership between Abuja and Accra will continue to grow, contributing to regional prosperity, economic integration and the collective vision of a peaceful and united Africa.
