The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government’s announcement of new ambassadorial postings, describing the process as a diplomatic misstep that could expose Nigeria to international embarrassment.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja.
In the statement, ADC states that announcing postings before securing the consent, known as agrément, of host countries contradicts established diplomatic practice under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
It notes that the convention requires the sending state to first obtain the approval of the receiving country before officially announcing or appointing a head of mission.
Acvording to the statement, the party also expresses concern that only 65 ambassadors were announced despite Nigeria maintaining about 109 diplomatic missions worldwide, questioning the government’s plans for the remaining missions without envoys.
The statement urges the government to follow established diplomatic protocols and provide clarity on Nigeria’s foreign policy strategy, particularly regarding unfilled diplomatic posts.
