The House of Representatives says it will expedite action on a proposed Mandatory National Decarbonisation Bill to address economic risks from climate change.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Dr Abass Tajudeen disclosed this at an event on climate policy and the proposed national decarbonisation framework in Abuja.
Represented by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education Muktar Shagaya, Dr Abbas warned that failure to address climate change could cost Nigeria hundreds of billions of naira annually.
The Director for Africa at the Global Wind Energy Council, Wangari Muchiri said the transition to a low-carbon economy could create jobs, attract investment, and diversify Nigeria’s economic base.
Chairman of the House Committee on the Mandatory National Decarbonisation Programme, Sesi Whingan noted that the National Assembly is committed to supporting the executive branch in advancing climate reforms.
Mr Whingan emphasized that several laws have already been enacted to institutionalise decarbonisation policies and strengthen Nigeria’s climate response framework.
