The Federal Government has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf region, warning that further hostilities could pose serious threats to regional and global stability.
In a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria calls on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.
The government stresses the need to prioritise dialogue over confrontation and urges strict adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions, particularly with regard to respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Nigeria emphasises the importance of caution in the use of lethal force to prevent further civilian casualties and protect established norms of international law.
According to the statement, preserving the existing legal framework that regulates and limits the use of force remains critical to safeguarding civilian populations and maintaining international order.
The statement says reaffirming its longstanding commitment to non-alignment, multilateralism, and constructive engagement, Nigeria expresses support for renewed diplomatic efforts within established international and regional frameworks to resolve the crisis.
It says the Federal Government welcomes ongoing initiatives focused on mediation, confidence-building, and dialogue, urging all stakeholders to pursue peaceful resolution in the interest of collective security and shared prosperity.
Nigeria, the statement adds, stands in solidarity with the international community in calling for calm and maintains that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and faithful adherence to international laws.
