Arsenal Lead Chelsea, United, Others In Ahanor Race

todayFebruary 27, 2026

Background

Arsenal are leading the chase for Nigerian-born Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with the Gunners weighing up a £30m bid for the 18-year-old centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

The north London club face stiff competition from Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid, all of whom have registered interest in one of Europe’s most coveted teenage defenders.

Arsenal view Ahanor as a high-potential defensive investment who could develop through their well-established pathway for young talent, similar to Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri. Manchester City are taking a similar long-term approach, while Chelsea are exploring a deal that could see the teenager signed and immediately loaned back to continue his development.

Atletico Madrid are among the most serious suitors, with Spanish outlet Fichajes reporting that coach Diego Simeone values the defender’s anticipation and strength in individual duels. The Spanish club’s technical department believe securing Ahanor “could anchor their defence for more than a decade.”

Ahanor has accumulated nearly 1,500 minutes in 24 appearances across all competitions this season for Atalanta, including outings in the UEFA Champions League. His composure, athleticism and tactical intelligence have drawn comparisons to Italian great Paolo Maldini, and Atalanta are believed to regard him as close to untouchable despite the mounting interest.

His contract reportedly includes a release clause in the region of €50m to €65m, a figure that will shape what is expected to be a fiercely contested transfer battle.

Adding another layer of intrigue is Ahanor’s international future. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he was previously registered as Nigerian due to immigration regulations. However, having turned 18, he has now been cleared to represent Italy at the senior level and is expected to switch his allegiance from Nigeria to Italy.Nigeria had reportedly attempted to persuade him to commit internationally, but Ahanor is understood to be focused on representing Italy.
