FRSC Steps-up Enforcement To Check Spike In Road Accidents

Background

The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC says it will step up enforcement and enlightenment to check increasing number of road accidents in the Federal Capital Territory FCT.

The FCT Sector Commander of FRSC Mr Felix Theman who stated this while addressing newsmen in Abuja expressed concern over flagrant disobedience to traffic rules and regulations by motorists especially commercial drivers.

Mr Theman said the corps had officially requested for more magistrates from the FCT judiciary to increase number of mobile court sessions for the peosecution o traffic offenders.

According to the FRSC Sector Commander, the Command has received over twenty new Electric Bikes from the FRSC headquarters to strengthen its patrol team while more personnel are being deployed to increase visibility on the highway.

He identified some of the grevious traffic Offences in FCT to include One way driving, overloading and over speeding as well as the use of phone while driving.

The Sector Commander noted that despite several meetings with transport union leaders on the establishment of illegal motor parks obstructing Free flow of traffic at some identified routes in the Six Area Councils, commercial drivers have turned every road sides to motor parks and picking of passengers points.

Mr Theman raised concerns over the illegal activities and operations of unregistered vehicles at some routes to include Lugbe – Airport express way, A-Y-A- Kubwa – Zuba express way as well as Zuba -Gwagwalada Road which he said was contributing to the increased number of road accidents in the federal capital territory.

He said the Corps will this year commence enforcement on movement restriction of trucks and articulated vehicles during peak hours to end incessant disagreement and struggling on the use of road with smaller vehicles which always resulted to accident.

The FCT FRSC Boss expressed believe that with the full implementation of these new arrangements and strict enforcement, number of road accidents in the territory reduce drastically in the nation’s capital.

He appealed to road users to always give maximum cooperation to FRSC towards the safety of lives and property and making road safe for socio economic activities.

Mr Theman assured that the corps would continue to work with stakeholders and other security agencies for effective traffic management across the Six Area Councils of the territory .
