Former Super Eagles defender and Anambra State FA Chairman, Chikelue Iloenyosi, has strongly defended Enyimba Chairman Nwankwo Kanu amid the club’s recent dip in results, insisting that unity, experience, and institutional support — not blame — are what the People’s Elephant need at this critical time.
With pressure mounting over inconsistent performances, including disappointing home results, Iloenyosi made it clear that Kanu’s role as chairman should not be conflated with technical matters on the pitch.
“Kanu is an administrator now. He is no longer a football player.
He is not the coach, he is not the technical director. His job is to ensure Enyimba moves to the next level in Nigerian and African football.”
Recruitment Challenges, Not Leadership Failure
According to Iloenyosi, the root of Enyimba’s struggles lies in recruitment decisions rather than administrative leadership.
“It is about the recruitment of players. They did not get the right players, and that is why they are losing matches — even at home.”
He cautioned against internal criticism and distractions, stressing that football success requires collaboration, not division.
Iloenyosi also referenced the controversy surrounding former Sporting Director Ifeanyi Ekwueme, revealing that he was initially blamed for the club’s struggles.
“They blamed Ifeanyi Ekwueme and had a go at him.
For peace sake, Kanu asked him to resign. Now they know that he was not the cause of the issue.”
The Anambra FA boss suggested that the situation highlights the dangers of rushing to judgment instead of addressing deeper structural concerns within the club.
“Consult Felix Anyasi-Agwu and Jude Anyadufu”
In a significant recommendation, Iloenyosi urged Enyimba’s leadership and stakeholders to tap into the wealth of experience of former club executives who understand the structure and politics of Nigerian football.
“The problem today is that experienced people like Felix Anyasi-Agwu and Jude Anyadufu have been left behind.
Anyasi-Agwu is a guru in Nigerian league football. You cannot beat him when it comes to running the league. He is driven by passion and knows exactly what he is doing. The same thing with Jude Anyadufu. These are people that should be consulted. They understand Enyimba inside out.”
Anyasi-Agwu previously presided over one of Enyimba’s most successful eras, while Anyadufu has also been instrumental in the club’s administrative framework. Iloenyosi believes their guidance could help stabilize the current situation.
Iloenyosi also issued a direct appeal to the Abia State authorities, particularly the Sports Commission, to close ranks around Kanu and provide full institutional backing.
“The Sports Commission in Abia State and all stakeholders must rally around Kanu and support him to succeed.
When Kanu succeeds, Abia State succeeds. Enyimba is the pride of Abia.”
He emphasized that football in Nigeria thrives at the state level, noting that governors and state institutions play a crucial role in sustaining clubs.
“The governor is supporting the team. Everyone must come together. Bring all stakeholders together, identify the problems, and fix them collectively. That is how football grows.”
Addressing the wider conversation about former players transitioning into administration, Iloenyosi maintained that ex-internationals bring valuable experience and global exposure that can benefit Nigerian football when properly supported.
He reiterated that calls for resignation or upheaval would only destabilize the club further.
“Kanu is not the problem.
Support him. Hold meetings. Get the right players. Put the right structures in place. That is the solution.”
As Enyimba navigates this challenging phase, Iloenyosi’s passionate intervention sends a clear message: the Aba giants must lean on stability, experience, and unity—rather than internal conflict—to restore their former glory.
