NILOWV Frowns At Refusal Of NASS To Amend Electoral Act

todayFebruary 18, 2026

Background

President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, has expressed deep disappointment over the National Assembly’s refusal to amend the Electoral Act, a decision she argues undermines the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.

She made the statement as women from across Nigeria peacefully gathered outside the National Assembly for the past two weeks to advocate for a vital amendment that mandates real-time transmission of election results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Results Viewing Portal (IREV).

In a statement Awunah-Ikyegh described women as vulnerable yet steadfast,  saying  the demand is not  a partisan issue, but  essential for ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

“This amendment is a cornerstone of transparent democracy and a safeguard against manipulation,” she stated. The President condemned the Assembly’s refusal to act on this crucial amendment, calling it a betrayal of the democratic process and a threat to public trust in future elections. She emphasized that such inaction jeopardizes the hopes of future generations and disrespects the struggles of women who have long campaigned for fair electoral practices.

Awunah-Ikyegh also directed her remarks to lawmakers who remained silent or opposed the amendment.

She however remains hopeful for a change of heart among legislators, urging them to reconsider their stance and amend the Electoral Act to restore faith in Nigeria’s electoral system.

She further called on NILOWV members across the nation to stay united and peaceful in their resolve. “Our strength lies in our unity. We will not be deterred by intimidation.”

“Nigeria’s democracy belongs to its people—let us protect it with courage and conviction,” she concluded.

The League of Women Voters of Nigeria continues to rally for reforms, emphasizing the importance of empowering citizens to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
