todayFebruary 18, 2026

Background

The Christian Association of Nigeria CAN has called on government at all levels to take proactive actions towards addressing the challenges facing the country.

CAN President Most Reverend Daniel Okoh in his Ash Wednesday message said many Nigerians are struggling with rising cost of living, uncertain Job opportunities, daily economic pressures and security concerns.

He said these realities call for practical action and shared commitment to finding lasting solutions.

He stressed the need for the federal government to move beyond drafting policies and focus on implementing them effectivelly.

“Nigeria does not lack policies; the real challenge is ensuring they are carried out fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to citizens.”

“Leaders must be intentionally inclusive in their decisions, mindful of Nigeria’s diversity and sensitivities, and committed to making sure government programmes truly reach the households, young people, and communities they are meant to serve.”

Most Reverend Daniel Okoh also encouraged citizens to reject division, violence, and the spread of false information.

According to him, our diversity across faiths, ethnicities, and cultures remain one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths.

He emphasized the need for Continued cooperation among religious communities, mutual respect, and responsible civic conduct which are essential for maintaining peace and national stability.

To the young people, whose creativity and determination shapes the nation’s future, the CAN President said this Lenten period should be a reminder to channel their energy into innovation, productive enterprise, and responsible participation in public life.

According to him Ash Wednesday, must renew our collective commitment to justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship stressing that the country’s progress depends on what all leaders and citizens alike, choose to build .

“As Christains in Nigeria and around the world observe Ash Wednesday, the season invites everyone to pause, reflect and think carefully about the direction of the country and role each citizen must play in reshaping it.”
