Spouses of members of House of Representatives are taking part in a two-day workshop in Abuja aimed at strengthening digital skills, leadership capacity and emotional wellbeing.
The training is being organised by the National Information Technology Development Agency in partnership with the House of Representatives Spouses Association.
Declaring the workshop open
wife of the Speaker of the House, Fatima Tajudeen- Abbas, said as partners to lawmakers, they need a balanced mental health and emotional resilience.
“As spouses, we are often the support system behind the scenes,” she said, noting that managing expectations, scrutiny and family responsibilities can take an emotional toll.
She warned that technology has intensified public exposure, saying that misinformation spreads quickly online and that children are increasingly vulnerable to digital risks.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the role of lawmakers’ spouses goes beyond ceremonial functions.
He described them as influential figures who often act as advisers, mediators and advocates within their communities.
He said the initiative supports the digital transformation agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including efforts to equip millions of Nigerians with technical skills for the global economy.
Participants were encouraged to use the workshop to strengthen their leadership voice and promote responsible digital engagement in their constituencies.
Participants are receiving training in digital and financial literacy, cyber protection and entrepreneurship, areas organisers say are critical for women’s empowerment in a rapidly evolving economy.
