FG Raises Alarm Over Illegal Recruitment Of Nigerians Into Foreign Wars

todayFebruary 16, 2026

Background

The Federal Government has expressed serious concern over the growing cases of Nigerians being illegally recruited to fight in foreign armed conflicts.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, authorities warn citizens to be cautious of deceptive schemes targeting vulnerable individuals with false promises.

According to the ministry, recent investigations and security reports reveal that some Nigerians were lured abroad under the guise of lucrative jobs, security contracts, educational opportunities, or migration incentives, only to be deployed to conflict zones.

“Victims were reportedly misled, pressured into signing military service agreements, and, in some cases, had their travel documents confiscated upon arrival”.

The ministry also notes that recruiters often entice victims with offers of high salaries, signing bonuses, and expedited citizenship, while contracts are sometimes presented in foreign languages without proper legal guidance.

It also says that Intermediaries are said to facilitate travel, using tourist or non-military visas.

The government warns that participation in foreign conflicts outside official state frameworks, poses grave risks and may violate both Nigerian and international laws regulating mercenary activities and foreign enlistment.

To curb the trend, government agencies are collaborating with domestic and international partners to investigate the situation and intensify public awareness campaigns.

According to the statement, Nigerian missions abroad have equally been directed to strengthen consular monitoring and advisory support for citizens.

The ministry calls on parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions to educate young Nigerians on the dangers of fraudulent overseas recruitment schemes.

The statement also advised Citizens to verify all foreign jobs or study offers through official government channels and promptly report suspicious approaches to relevant authorities.

The Federal government, further, reaffirms its commitment to protecting the safety, welfare, and dignity of its citizens worldwide.
