FCT Elections: SDP Condemns Hate Speech Against AMAC Chairmanship Candidate

todayFebruary 10, 2026

Background

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has condemned alleged hate speech and threats against its Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship candidate, Dr. Obinna Simon, ahead of the February 21, 2026 FCT Council elections.

This is contained in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, in Abuja.

The statement raises concern over a viral video allegedly showing a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) making threatening remarks during a campaign event in Mabushi, AMAC.

According to the statement, the SDP describes the development as disturbing and warned that inflammatory statements and intimidation could undermine peaceful conduct of the elections.

The statement calls on security agencies to investigate the matter and take necessary action in line with the law.

It notes that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, such rights must be exercised responsibly.

According to the statement, the SDP also urges the Federal Capital Territory Administration and relevant authorities to put adequate security measures in place to protect candidates, supporters and voters before, during and after the elections.

It reaffirms its commitment to peaceful and issue-based campaigning and called on all political actors to avoid hate speech and violence.
